A genuinely rare and fascinating piece of photographic history — the Ensign Mascot A2, a quarter-plate falling plate detective camera dating from around 1910. Detective cameras of this type were designed to be inconspicuous: the box form concealed the camera's purpose, allowing photographers to capture candid subjects without attracting attention. The Mascot A2 is an uncommon model number within the Ensign Mascot range, making this an especially interesting find for collectors of British antique cameras. Six plate holders are included, stored flat inside the camera body for transport.

Please note this is an antique item. Wear and ageing as described below are consistent with its age and are part of its character and historical appeal.

Condition

  • Overall: Good condition for age.
  • Metal areas: Some tarnishing.
  • Leatherette: Generally good — a few areas of wear and loss.
  • Shutter: Working — operation is clunky but functional, consistent with age.
  • Plate drop mechanism: Working.
  • Viewfinders: Both bright-line viewers are cloudy — possibly some fungus; the top viewer retains a degree of vision.
  • Carrying strap: Present and usable — would benefit from a leather feed.
  • Plate holders: 6 included, stored flat inside.

Provenance & Specification

  • Maker: Houghton Ltd (Ensign), London — one of the most significant British camera manufacturers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, producing a wide range of cameras under the Ensign and Butcher brands. The Mascot range was Houghton’s detective camera series, produced in the 1900s–1910s.
  • Type: Falling plate detective camera — plates are loaded through the rear door and dropped sequentially into an exposure position by a lever on the top of the camera, allowing multiple exposures without opening the camera.
  • Format: Quarter plate — glass plates approximately 3.5 × 4.5 inches.
  • Model: A2 — an uncommon model number within the Ensign Mascot range.
  • Era: c.1910, England.
  • Appeal: A wonderful and genuinely rare survivor from the earliest days of popular photography — the Ensign Mascot A2 is a serious collector’s piece, a superb display object, and an incomparable prop for period film and theatre productions.
