A lovely and historically significant half-frame 35mm camera — the Agfa Optima-Parat, produced in 1964. At the time of its introduction, the Optima-Parat was one of the most sophisticated half-frame cameras available, combining Agfa's acclaimed automatic exposure system with the compact half-frame format. Half-frame cameras expose each frame at half the standard 35mm size, yielding up to 72 exposures from a standard 36-exposure roll — an appealing economy that made them popular with serious amateurs and travellers.

Condition

  • Overall: Good condition.
  • Shutter: Works — may be slightly temperamental at the fastest speeds, but not film tested.
  • Optics: Good.
  • Mechanics: Work correctly.
  • Cosmetic: Some minor age-related wear including a few small scratches — consistent with age.

Provenance

  • Maker: Agfa, West Germany — founded in 1867 and one of the great names of European photography, Agfa produced cameras and film for over a century. The Optima series was Agfa's flagship range of automatic cameras, renowned for their reliable selenium-cell automatic exposure system that required no battery.
  • Model: Optima-Parat — the half-frame variant of the Optima series. ‘Parat’ denotes the half-frame format (from the German ‘Halbformat’). Introduced in 1963, it was one of the most capable half-frame cameras of its era.
  • Format: Half-frame 35mm — produces 18×24mm frames, yielding up to 72 shots from a standard 36-exposure roll of 35mm film.
  • Era: 1964 — the height of West German camera engineering.
  • Appeal: A refined and capable camera from one of Europe’s great photographic houses — the half-frame format is enjoying a strong revival among film photography enthusiasts, making this both a collectible and a usable camera.
