A stunning and increasingly rare hospital-size glass chemical bottle, formerly containing Glycol Thymoline — a widely used antiseptic and nasal irrigation solution popular in hospitals and pharmacies throughout the early-to-mid 20th century. This magnificent bottle retains its original label: Napth Rect, Wright, Layman & Umney Ltd — one of Britain's most distinguished pharmaceutical and chemical manufacturers. At approximately 32cm tall, it makes a commanding display piece.

Condition

  • Glass: Good condition — no chips or cracks.
  • Staining: Moderate internal staining from former contents — consistent with age and use, adds to the character.
  • Label: Original paper label present — some yellowing consistent with age.
  • Height: Approximately 32cm tall.

Provenance

  • Manufacturer: Wright, Layman & Umney Ltd, London — one of Britain's most respected pharmaceutical and chemical manufacturers, founded in the 19th century and best known for producing Wright's Coal Tar Soap and a range of antiseptic and pharmaceutical preparations widely used in hospitals, pharmacies, and households across the British Empire. The firm supplied hospitals, the military, and the general public for decades.
  • Contents: Napth Rect (Rectified Naphthol) — a pharmaceutical-grade chemical used as an antiseptic and in the preparation of various medicinal compounds.
  • Size: Hospital size — the large format bottles used in hospital dispensaries and pharmacies, as opposed to the smaller retail sizes. These are significantly rarer than standard chemist's bottles.
  • Era: Early-to-mid 20th century.
  • Appeal: A magnificent and rare piece of British pharmaceutical history — the combination of hospital size, original label, intact glass, and the Wright, Layman & Umney provenance makes this an exceptional find for collectors of apothecary and medical ephemera, interior stylists, and prop buyers.
