A lovely little dental articulator manufactured by Mortimer, one of the respected names in British dental instrument making. Dental articulators are precision instruments used in dentistry and prosthodontics to simulate jaw movements and hold plaster casts of the teeth — allowing the dentist or dental technician to replicate the patient's bite alignment and jaw motion when crafting dentures, crowns, or bridges. A fascinating and tactile piece of dental history.

Condition

  • Material: Constructed from gunmetal — a durable alloy of copper, tin, and zinc, traditionally used for precision instruments.
  • Cosmetic: Good condition with some remains of plaster evident (consistent with use) and slight tarnishing of the gunmetal — both entirely expected and characteristic of a working instrument of this age.
  • Dimensions: Approximately 20cm tall, 8.5cm along the base.

Provenance

  • Maker: Mortimer — a British dental instrument manufacturer.
  • Item: Dental articulator — used to hold and articulate plaster casts of the upper and lower teeth, simulating the patient's occlusion (bite) for prosthetic work.
  • Era: Mid-20th century.
  • Significance: A hands-on piece of the history of British dentistry — the kind of precision instrument that underpinned dental practice for decades before digital scanning replaced traditional casting techniques.
