A distinctive and mechanically fascinating post-war 8mm cine camera — the Zeiss Ikon Movikon 8, introduced in 1952. The Movikon is immediately recognisable for its unusual horizontal design: the film is twisted 90 degrees inside the body, placing the lens on the side rather than the front. This gives the camera a uniquely sculptural, almost architectural appearance that sets it apart from every other cine camera of the era. A genuine conversation piece as well as a working instrument.

Condition

  • Overall: Mechanically sound and fully working.
  • Clockwork motor: Runs fine.
  • Optics: Good.
  • Cosmetic: Some scratches on the front plate (see photos) and a couple of very small minor marks on the back.
  • Case: Original leather case included — a couple of small marks on the outside and a few marks inside, consistent with age.

Provenance

  • Maker: Zeiss Ikon AG, Stuttgart, West Germany — one of the most prestigious names in the history of optical and camera manufacturing. Zeiss Ikon was formed in 1926 from the merger of several leading German camera makers and produced some of the finest cameras and optical instruments of the 20th century. The Movikon was part of their post-war cine camera range, demonstrating the engineering ingenuity that defined the Zeiss Ikon name.
  • Model: Movikon 8 — introduced 1952. Uses standard Double 8 film on 25-foot daylight-loading spools. Mechanical clockwork spring motor drive.
  • Design: The horizontal body with 90-degree film twist and side-mounted lens is unique to the Movikon — a bold engineering solution that gives the camera its unmistakable silhouette.
  • Film: Double 8 (Standard 8) — still available from specialist suppliers.
  • Appeal: A rare and highly collectible camera from one of the great names of German optical manufacturing — the Movikon's unusual design makes it as striking on a shelf as it is in use. Sought after by serious collectors of vintage cine equipment and Zeiss enthusiasts.
